Ever been to a city council meeting that got interrupted by farting?

Posted on June 7th, 2010 by admin in city council | 3 Comments »

Please refer to the recent Ohio City Council meeting where there were boy scouts present. They farted and it caused the members on the council to take a recess to regain their composure. (They were laughing up a storm.)

No, that is a new one on me…..but I suppose i could see how that could be funny.

What reasons can city council prevent a business from being in a city?

Posted on June 4th, 2010 by admin in city council | 3 Comments »

I know this question seems vague, so I think I better explain. I am searching for a general explanation of the types of power that city councils have over issuing permits for businesses. Like, can they reject a permit for any reason? And what type of information is required regarding submitting a permit. I know these are going to differ drastically based on every county, but anything general would be nice. However, if you would prefer to be specific I would prefer it to refer to Chicago/Aurora codes. Thank you for any help.

It happens all the time.

The resort town of Ocean City, Maryland DENIES the existence of businesses ALL THE TIME because…at THEIR digression…. decide your business may not "fit with the family atmosphere" of their town…. so they REFUSE to issue permits and therefore, prevent you from opening your business.

LOCAL governments are FREE to "govern" local issues.

Try to open a topless bar next to a school…. try to open a gun store in Washington DC…. happens a lot.

Who is surprised that the Republicans won the Mayors office and the city council in Indianapolis?

Posted on May 27th, 2010 by admin in city council | 3 Comments »

Indianapolis had a Democratic mayor and the majority of the city council was held by Democrats before tonights election.

After watching our dem congress stall out and procrastinate, I’m not a bit surprised. Dems don’t get stuff accomplished.

How do you become part of your city’s council? and what do they do exactly?

Posted on May 25th, 2010 by admin in city council | 2 Comments »

Do you have to be elected or appointed? I was also wondering what they did exactly. Do those people have jobs outside of what they do as members of the city council? How old do you generally have to be and what sort of experience must you have? I am just basically curious about what the city council is as a whole. Thank you for your responses.

A very good way to start out, is to attend all open meetings of your city council, take notes, remember people and their names. Remember issues. Gather a background knowledge of how the members of the council handle disagreements and challenges.

As you are educating yourself about the mechanics, you will find opportunities to meet and speak with council members and perhaps take that opportunity to ask questions that may come into your mind during the meetings.

You may wind up loving it or perhaps even hating it. But if you do decide to pursue that path to public service, you will be aware of the ‘drill’ and will go into it with valuable information.
